DeeAnn Dean, left, and Holly Watkins were two friendly Knoxvillians we ran into last month when we visited The Swag. They were celebrating DeeAnn’s birthday. You will almost always see someone you know there!
On top of the normal relaxing good times that define a visit to The Swag and Cataloochee Ranch, there are a couple of unique — and newsworthy — events on the horizon. Both Relais & Chateaux resorts, located just 90 miles from downtown Knoxville, are owned by Knoxvillians Annie and David Colquitt.
This coming Sunday, Sept. 8, Knoxville’s only James Beard Award-winning chef, Joseph Lenn of J.C. Holdway, will star in the final event of Cataloochee’s Summer Supper Series. Lenn, with the ranch’s executive chef, Jeb Aldrich, and his culinary team will prepare a five-course prix fixe menu with wine pairings. The cost: $200 per ticket. A bargain.
Brook Sabel of Peay Wines, located on the West Sonoma Coast, will introduce the wines from Peay Vineyards that will be paired with Lenn’s courses. Make reservations here.
Then, from Nov. 14-17, Garden & Gun magazine will buy out both The Swag and Cataloochee Ranch for its annual Garden & Gun Society meeting. It includes beautiful lodging, gourmet meals, experts giving talks, musical entertainment, and outdoor activities like horseback riding and hiking, in addition to the stunning views and relaxing environment that are the mainstays of these two Western North Carolina treasures. You must be a member of the Garden & Gun Society to participate. But it sure sounds like fun! (Here’s a link to the Society’s website, if you’d like to join.) The scheduled visit is sure to mean great exposure for the beautiful venues!
We saw a lot of bunnies this year. So much so, that we started calling the daily 6 p.m. gathering for drinks and hors ‘d oeuvres “Hoppy Hour!”
Alan and I first started visiting The Swag in 2018 when the Colquitts purchased it from Dan and Deener Matthews, known to many Knoxvillians because of his longtime stewardship as the rector of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Knoxville.
Since our first visit back then, we have become regulars, now making it a habit to visit three times a year — in spring, summer, and fall. We popped over last month for our summer check-in and ran into some other Knoxvillians that we knew. That happens all the time at The Swag, which is part of the reason we love it so much.
Since the Colquitts purchased the nearby Cataloochee Ranch, visitors to The Swag are welcome to slip away and also go to Cataloochee at no additional charge. Friendly drivers will even take you there in Volvo SUVs with The Swag’s logos on the side!
On our visit, we discovered that the newest development at The Swag is the addition this season of a pickleball court. “It was our top guest request for the past couple of years,” said owner Annie Colquitt. Co-owner David said the new court provided “a little more activity” for a segment of guests who requested it.
Additionally, the gardens on both properties continue to expand with plans for them to provide up to 75 percent of the flowers and produce that are used there within the next several years, according to garden manager Abigail Anzelmo. They also have started raising Black Angus cattle at Cataloochee Ranch to provide beef for the menus of both properties.
Here are some photos from the visit. You need to go!
Yep, we saw a bear! It was a juvenile, some said, and it came onto actual Swag property. Operators detonate a loud warning horn, called “the bear horn,” when one of the creatures comes near the property.
The Swag literally abuts the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as this sign indicates.
Alan, left, with Jonathan and Kristin Miller, two other Knoxvillians whose visit overlapped with ours.
If you go to The Swag, try to include a Saturday or Wednesday in your visit. That’s when there’s a picnic at beautiful Gooseberry Knob. That’s where this gazebo is.
Lots of things were in bloom, of course.
Daylily at Gooseberry.
Steven Reinhold, one of the “experts in residence” while we were there, welcoming folks to the picnic at Gooseberry Knob.
I had a seafood burger. Other options were hamburgers, bison burgers, hot dogs and sausages. With lots of salads and other accompaniments.
It’s only a quarter-mile hike from The Swag proper to Gooseberry Knob. Here’s Alan on the return. You also can catch a lift in one of the branded SUVs.
New this year, a Swag cat! This is Birdie. David Colquitt describes her as part of the “mice elimination program!” Ha. She’s very sweet. (If you aren’t a mouse!)
We always visit the garden to see what’s new.
In this case, the gardener was new! This is Abigail Anzelmo, the garden manager. She’s committed to organic and sustainable gardening at The Swag and Cataloochee Ranch.
This bee hive is relatively new — in that it had to be started all over again after a bear broke in and ate all the honey and larvae from the first attempt. Now, it is protected by an electric fence.
Dahlias are kind of the signature flower of The Swag, Abigail said.
Snapdragons appear in many table arrangements.
As do zinnias.
Another popular posy.
Abigail said the intention is to cultivate plants that are attractive to pollinators.
Another fan of the garden.
Signature garden sculpture.
Outside the garden are some inviting places to perhaps bring a lunch and relax.
Love this swing.
On this visit, we stayed for the first time in a room called “Annie’s Room.”
It was our anniversary and Alan surprised me with flowers!
He loves to make use of the fireplaces in the rooms. And, since it generally is 10 degrees cooler there than it is in Knoxville, that’s not a bad idea — especially at night!
View from the porch of Annie’s Room.
Meanwhile, back at the Swag House, folks start to gather around 6 for “Hoppy Hour.”
They have the best charcuterie boards! Other offerings on this day were Caprese salads on sticks and smoked curry cauliflower hummus.
Yep.
Roderick Nieves runs the bar. Here he’s pouring (guess what!) Pinot Grigio!
The guy also knows his way around a martini!
Outside dining porch ready for dinner service.
Here’s one night’s dinner. Clockwise from top left: an amuse bouche of fried green tomatoes with Fresno chili aioli; roasted onion and cheese bread; coal roasted sweet potato soup with curry oil and pepitas; my entree, which was summer squash risotto with herbs, tomato jam and grana padano cheese; local heirloom tomatoes with field peas, buttermilk dressing, and garden herbs; Alan’s sunburst trout with Swag pole beans, crispy potatoes, nori brown butter, and almonds; Alan’s fruit for dessert. Wow!
That same night, a New York Strip steak and a crispy Rohan duck leg were other options on the menu. Wine pairings can be added to dinner for $55.
In addition to Roderick, Elycia Jones is a wonderful bartender and wine server. And I do enjoy some Sancerre from time to time!
One night we did take advantage of the opportunity to go to Cataloochee Ranch for dinner. It was excellent.
Here’s a view from the porch when we arrived. As you can see, it was hazy so we missed the famous views from there.
Here’s the main dining room at Cataloochee. It’s called The Switchback.
Clockwise from top left, Alan’s prime filet; my wood fired pizza Margherita; leafy greens with grilled Carolina peaches; brown butter potatoes; and seasonal mushrooms that we split.
I saw Alan literally cut his filet with a fork. And those mushrooms were fabulous on my pizza and accompanying his steak!
We had after dinner drinks in front of the fireplace in the bar, called the Tack Room.
Those are just the highlights of a wonderful four-night visit. We also had a wine tasting, a cocktail class, and Alan had two massages! When we left, we noticed these leaves were starting to change colors!
That just made us look forward even more to our next planned visit in October!
Photos are absolutely beautiful!
Happy Anniversary! What a great celebration! Thank you for introducing us to these lovely places.
Mary Pat: Thanks! It would be difficult to take a bad picture there!
Madeline: Thanks! We highly recommend a visit. But, beware. You may become a regular like us!
Thanks for the updates. Enjoyed a visit with David and Annie at a recent event at Elkmont.
Georgiana: Aren’t they a fun couple?
They are!
