Steve Hackney, one of the Summer Supper hosts, offers a Pimm’s Cup to guests at the home of Penny Lynch and Kimbro Maguire.
The Knox Heritage Summer Suppers are over, but I still have a few posts about them to help us make it until they start again in June of 2015. In the meantime, the Knoxville Symphony League’s Elegant Dining Series will launch October 14 and continue until spring. Both of these series are fun ways to help two important organizations thrive, while getting a private glimpse into the fabulous homes of our friends and neighbors!
And speaking of fabulous homes …
Penny Lynch and Kimbro Maguire bought their 1920s Barber McMurry home on Mellen Avenue in 1998. They spent the next three years renovating the English Arts and Crafts style house, completing two additions that blend seamlessly with the original architecture. The Summer Supper they offered to Knox Heritage patrons was called “Art, Antiques and Architecture” because of the eclectic decor of the house. In addition to modern art, the furnishings include antiques that Penny has been collecting since she was 15.
Gary Bentley, one of the hosts, offers mango and shrimp shooters as appetizers.
These things were fantastic!
Natalie Kimbro played violin in the comfortable den. Very nice touch.
We claimed seats at a beautiful table in that room. Other tables were set up throughout the house. There were 30 guests.
The centerpieces were made up of individual little arrangements in mint julep cups, which everyone was instructed to take home.
Many of us took our cocktails outside. From left, Bill and Susan Morris with host and homeowner Kimbro Maguire.

Hosts circulated passing smoked salmon crostini.
Josh Birdwell was another host passing hors d’oeuvres.
Cucumber sandwiches.
The back patio was inviting.
Well known sculptor Julie Warren Conn, a former Knoxvillian, created this piece — her only fountain, Maguire said.

Lovely back yard.

A cute guest room. Notice the cute stuffed dogs on the bed.
Here’s one of their real dogs! Quite a resemblance, huh?

I liked the monkey lamp.

Another lovely bedroom.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Shannon Webb was preparing gazpacho. Yum.
And Barbara Apking’s lemon tarts with raspberries were waiting to be sliced.
Todd Richesin, left, and Bobby Brown were among the guests.
A huge Richard Jolley head.
Here’s that gazpacho. It was the first course after we were seated.
Watermelon and tomato salad over arugula.
Entree was seared filet of beef with chimichurri sauce, potato and mushroom gratin, and asparagus in lemon vinaigrette.
Robert and Beth Miller were among our tablemates.
Carolyn and Chad Boetger.
Marla and John Peterson were among the guests.
This made Alan smile.
When we said goodbye, our pal Jeannie Dulaney was getting a bird’s eye view from the spiral staircase.
Delicious food photos and a dog. Perfect Blue Streak!
Great house and grounds Fay Bailey
Thanks, Maria! That was the cutest doggie!
Fay: Great observation coming from you! You are the house and grounds expert!
Thank you for sharing such a gorgeous Summer Supper! We can’t wait until next year! We are already planning the next series. Stay tuned!
That’s exciting, Kim! Can’t wait to see the lineup. I still have one more left to post from this past year. They are just so much fun.
What a beautiful home! And the food looked fantastic. Thanks for your support of Summer Suppers. I can tell you that the hosts enjoy them as much as the guests.
Gay: I think the hosts are part of the reason the Summer Suppers are so much fun. They really get into it. And they are generally so relaxed and friendly. Plus, they usually are our friends, which always makes a party more festive.
Sorry to miss this one! By all accounts, this year’s Summer Suppers hit it out of the park. (That’s very timely baseball terminology.) Great photos; nice dog shot.
