October makes its presence felt in downtown Knox

One of the best things about Knoxville is the fact that we have four seasons. Everybody says that. The Knoxville Chamber even puts it in their marketing materials. One great place to watch the seasons change is in the heart of downtown — at the Market Square Farmers’ Market.

We visited this past Saturday and autumn definitely was making its presence known — in the pumpkins and greens and gourds. Here are some of the things we saw during a stroll through the booths.

Several vendors were offering muscadines.

The folks from Rushy Springs Farm have the largest variety of pepper and garlic all season long. But this time of year, the number of peppers is at its peak.

After shopping at the Farmers’ Market, we snagged a table on the patio of Tomato Head for brunch. Many friends passed by and stopped to chat. What struck us was that so many of them were actually giddy about what downtown Knoxville has become. “I just feel so lucky to be here now,” one said.

Our buddy Bob Deck composed a haiku poem on the spot for us and posted it on Twitter. Here it is, in case you missed it: “Market Square fiddlers/chillin’ with Mozart and jigs./Music for fall air.”

Go down there Saturday if you can. You’ll be giddy, too!

Hey, Cynthia, did you get a new camera? These pictures seem to be much more colorful than usual. Maybe it’s just the subject.

Fall in Knoxville and the Market Square Farmers’ Market are two of my favorite things. PS: I highly recommend the salad turnips: slightly crunchy, slightly sweet, wonderful with mixed greens and the little yellow plum tomatoes the onion and garlic man had last week.
