Don’t delay! Time to celebrate Apple Day 2011

Just a quick little post to remind you that fall is in the air here in Knoxville and, in addition to football, that means another important thing: apples! Yes, it’s Apple Day 2011. Time to head to Carver’s Orchard in nearby Cosby, TN.

Click here to see the origin of Apple Day as our friends Dawn and Richard Ford and we celebrate it. Here is a glimpse of our celebration of Apple Day 2011 this past weekend. (OK. We also watched the UT/Georgia football game on TV. And being the only Georgia fan in the bunch, I had to temper my enthusiasm. But it still was fun.)In addition to  apples, Carver’s has the best selection of gourds, pumpkins and decorative hay bales around. Great prices, too.

I loved this green pumpkin. But Alan had his doubts.

There are scores of different varieties of apples at Carver's. These are granny smiths.

In addition to apples and fall decorations, Carver’s also has vegetables, jellies, jams, butters, honey and apple cider. Oh, and fried apple pies!

After our pie break, it was back to shopping!

Dawn went for the pink ladies.

The long-suffering Alan thought we were buying too many decorations for our downtown condo.

Then it was on to Dawn and Richard’s cabin off the Gatlinburg Spur where we set up a cheese and apple tasting.

Clockwise from 12 o'clock: stilton with lemon, fuji apples, cambozola cheese, pink lady apples, sharp cheddar and winesap apples

The cheese and apples got us to halftime, when we threw some beautiful steaks on the grill to serve with our baked potatoes, roasted asparagus and tomatoes from the Market Square Farmers’ Market. Dessert? What else?

I was relying on the dessert to sweeten the mood of my fellow game-watchers. It only helped a little!

Here's the view from the porch on Sunday morning.

What DID help was waking up Sunday to a gorgeous day and the excitement the guys felt to hit the links at Gatlinburg Municipal Golf Course and Dawn and I felt as we headed to Tanger Outlet Mall.

So, here’s my advice: get up to Carver’s while the apples are so plentiful and the leaves are turning. You will truly know what fall is supposed to feel like.

Gay and Ellen: Of course I’ve participated in wine tastings. And cheese tastings. But I’ve never had an actual apple tasting where I could compare the tastes, textures and juiciness of various varieties, side by side. It was very enlightening. I loved the taste of the fuji. But the winesaps and pink ladies were crisper and juicier. Of course, being so fresh, they all were good. Another advantage of having Carver’s so handy.

    Thanks for commenting.

Apples and cheese. Was there a little wine in there?? What makes it complete? Great friends.
