Are you ever too old for a slumber party? Perhaps.

On Friday, five girlfriends decided to rent a couple of movies, have a couple of drinks and spend the night together. You know, have a slumber party like we did when we were girls.

Dawn Ford volunteered to host. Her husband, Richard, has a fabulous “man cave” with a big screen TV which he (with some trepidation) agreed to loan us for the evening. (Before the party started, Richard abandoned the scene and joined my husband, Alan, for a boys’ night out dinner.)

Things started on a bright note. Dawn welcomed us all with a pitcher of “lemon drops,” a cocktail she has spent years perfecting.

They were quite tasty!

Julia Bently approves of the lemon drops.

To go with the lemon drops: fantastic crab dip, another Dawn speciality.

Now, on to dinner. We had a goal of starting the first movie at 8. Salad course was watermelon and tomatoes topped with a delicious balsamic reduction. It is a Barefoot Contessa recipe.

Dawn drizzles on the fabulous dressing.

Dawn is an accomplished cook. The main course was pasta with vegetables and turkey sausage. (She shares her recipes, if you want it.)

Yummy.

Yummy.

We didn’t make our 8 p.m. deadline to start the movies due, primarily, to the stimulating conversation, which was getting increasingly louder as time went by. (I often say that what our group needs is some introverts — somebody has got to listen to all of us talkers!) At 9:30, we had changed into pajamas and piled into the man cave.

What's a movie without popcorn? And wine, of course.

Dawn and Richard have two sweet dogs who also joined in the fun.

Henry is the brown one and Barkley is the black one.

Julia REALLY liked Henry!

Then things took a nasty turn. We couldn’t figure out how to turn the movie on! In our defense, there were FOUR remotes to deal with! Unlike a man, Dawn consulted the instructions.

Hmmmm.

Hmmmm.

Then Rosa tried to help out. (I love seeing those Reese’s Pieces leaning against the wine glass!)

I guess red wine goes with peanut butter?

Uh-oh. Still have a black screen.

"What the . . . ?"

Then, some progress. A blue screen. I can’t imagine why the photos are starting to get fuzzy.

At least it's getting power.

Finally, success in the form of the FBI warning. And, we’re off! Previews!

Yay!

Yay!

The movies were terrific. We saw the tearjerker, “The Greatest,” followed by “Calendar Girls,” which we loved. Just as in the slumber parties of our youth, we stayed up way too late. (Dawn and I saw 3 a.m. come and go.)
Dawn’s sweet husband, Richard, played short-order cook in the morning. Unbelievably, Julia made it to her 7:30 tennis game, Rosa made it to her 9 a.m. spin class, I made my 10:30 manicure and Dawn made her 11 a.m. volunteer assignment. When are we doing it again?
Thank you, Richard!

As strange as it may seem this was actually our book club. But instead of discussing books we go to the movie. This was a fun night although I’m not sure about my picture in my jammies (not my best look) being all over town! Next morning a couple of us thought maybe we were too old for a slumber party.

This is a hoot!. Carol Bailey, Corinne Bell and I have done this several times. Guess who’s always the first to fall asleep while watching movies!

Ha, George, that’s the first rule I learned about slumber parties back in the day: don’t be the first to fall asleep! Of course, this weekend we didn’t freeze anyone’s bra or put anything in their hair or put their finger in water like we used to do! Maybe next time!

I have been wanting to have a slumber party! We’ve talked about having one downtown where we’d all go to Pete’s in our robes the next morning. Of course, we’d have the same 4- remote situation to deal with. I don’t have the slightest idea how to operate Bill’s tvs. Good thing I’d rather read! I’m impressed you all figured it out.

I’m impressed by the late hours. Three friends and I have done this for years and we rarerly make it past 9 p.m. It has evolved into a long weekend “staycation” at someone’s house in the past two years.
