I have passed the Regas sign since I was knee high to a grasshopper, but I never once walked though the doors of Regas. Excuse me while I go in the corner to kick myself.

Hi Mox,
I just now read your post about Regas. What a heartfelt tribute — and also a 101 course in how to make a favorite eatery your own. (Our favorite place in Great Falls is the Suki Cafe, where the owner, Paul, recently created a sushi roll named after me. Love that place!) I’m touched that you and Alan took me to Regas last time I was in town (or maybe that’s just where you always go). Sad to see it close.

Thanks for the link, Pam! Saw that photo in the paper and was so happy for them. Glo, what a sweet story. Bill, you would certainly know where all the great political conversations go on! Very sad for us. But, hopefully, Bill Regas will have a great time in his retirement.

I first learned about Regas from my father. He grew up in Newport, and he and his father would come to Knoxville on Saturdays and eat at the lunch counter. Deliberately I had my first filet at Regas. When my daughter was studying in Spain in her junior year, she called and said, “Mom, you know that I have had Regas Red Velvet cake on all of my birthdays….” I was able to send her one, which arrived on her birthday! The stories are legion, but all full of loving care. There was always a family member at Regas, which is one of the reasons it was special. You are right, Cynthia, sometimes you do have to let something very special go, if the time is right. Thing is, I’m having a really hard time agreeing that the time is right.

Cynthia, thanks for the great tribute to Regas, the restaurant, and Bill Regas, the man. I sure do remember when a lunch to talk business or politics absolutely had to be at Regas. I am very sad to see it close.

How sad that when something is closing people flock to be there in the final days. If all these folks had visited Regas regularly we would not be losing this Knoxville landmark.
